Everyone looks forward the Open Shows that traditionally mark the end of summer and the racing season. And for west coast racers, running the Open Show at Shasta Raceway has been a long-standing tradition. This weekend, Oct. 3, 4, 5 Rick Faeth, the new promoter at the historic facility in Anderson, CA, is hosting the inaugural U.S. Army 150 Super Late Model Open Show, the 5th Annual Western Modifieds National and more.
The U.S. Army 150 will be a true “open show” with no sanctioning body and with $5,000.00 to win and a purse worth over $25,000 the event is drawing a lot of long-tow entries. In a time when racing has gotten more and more expensive, and the price of gas has made long-distance tows more difficult, the big purses are tempting drivers and teams that were on the fence about attending. The event, formerly known as the Win-River 150 or 125, has been reinvented and returned to its 150 lap status and has a new set of rules.
With a history that stretches back nearly 2 decades some of the top names in NASCAR, ARCA and other national series’ have competed in this race. “It’s more like a 3-day racing festival.” Said one racer. “Most of us campout and hang out in the pits all weekend swapping stories and renewing old friendships. It’s a blast.” Shasta has been the favorite open show of many racers because of the fun atmosphere and great racing.
In addition to the US Army 150 Rick Faeth and Faeth Motorsports will host the 5th Annual Western Modified Nationals. The 3 day event isn’t just for Super Late Models, it has long featured one of the biggest turnouts of Modified drivers on the left coast. With a $2,000.00 to win purse the best-of-the-best Modified drivers are locked into the battle.
And it doesn’t end there. The NAPA Auto Parts Mini Stock Nationals will also be run this weekend. After Mini Stock car count being on the decline for several years, Faeth has brought the division back from near extinction, with a full pack of Minis showing up for each points race. Out-of-towners from Roseville, Eureka, and beyond are towing into for the action packed weekly shows. Ken Krause took home the honors of 2008 Mini Stock Champion over veteran Dale Stelt and Nanci Wright.
And the Shasta Open wouldn’t be complete with the Franklin Auto Parts Bomber Open Show. This promises to be a great race with track favorites, like Bobby “Corndog” Crowell, who took home the track championship this year, and tow-ins filling out the field.
Making the long tow all the way from Victoria, British Columbia Canada Darrel Midgley has been competing in this event as far back as this writer can remember. Midgley and his team always put on a great show. And from a little town in Arizona, Victor Pfluger is hauling in to do double-duty in both a Super Late Model and to take his maiden voyage in a Modified. Under the auspices of crewchief Chuck Lahorgue this will be the youngsters second visit to the show. At 16 Pfluger was crowned ASA Speedtruck Champion and recently conquered NASCAR veteran Ron Hornaday in a heated late model race. Topping the bill will be local favorites and top finishers from past events, Steven Gannon, Randy Houston and Howard Ford. Dave Miller, Brad Wasmund, Junior Roddy, Mike Doss and other big name drivers are already slated to compete.
